                         DESCRIPTION/REQUIREMENTS

The ATTENDANCE MONITOR is a full-featured attendance
program for educators. With it you can monitor
absences, excused absences, and tardies; you can
show or print the data in several formats.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: DOS 2.1 or higher, 640 K, 1 drive
a sheet feed printer is recommended; program is hard drive ready

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 2
                                 DISK USE

DISKS: There is one disk. You should use the same disk to
contain the program and the data. If you install to a hard
drive, you should use the same directory for data and for the
program. You may duplicate the disk with DISKCOPY.
Do NOT write protect the disk, as the program writes to the disk.
For full functioning of the program, you must have the COMMAND.COM
file from your DOS disk copied onto the program disk itself.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 3
                      ---->    QUICK STARTUP

If installing to a hard drive, skip to the next section.

      1. To run the program from the disk directly, you must copy the
COMMAND.COM file from your DOS disk to the program disk.

  2. To learn to use the ATTENDANCE MONITOR, get your system to the DOS A>
Then, insert the PROGRAM disk in drive A, and type ATTEND
From the menu, you should pick EXIT/HELP/REGISTRATION and then HELP.
                           You will see this manual.

     3. You may also choose to print this manual once you access the HELP.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 4
                           HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION

To install the program on the hard drive, insert the program disk
in drive A and type INSTALL <return>
Follow the instructions that you will see.

Two instructors cannot share the same hard drive installation.

If you use a computer at home and at school, you should
use floppies to run and store the data, rather than a
hard drive. You can simply copy the original program
disk with the DISKCOPY command, and then use the copy.

If you are REinstalling the program, you may see some error codes
appear on screen. These are only because your subdirectory already
exists on your hard drive. You may ignore these messages.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 5 FILES ON DISK

A complete list of all files on the disk is contained in the
file named FILES found on the program disk. You can look at it
with a word processor or the DOS TYPE command.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 6
                        INSTALLATION TO WINDOWS 3.1

    the window of your choice.
    3. Click once on the word FILE in the top left of the screen.
    4. Click once on the word NEW.
    5. Click once on the bullet to the left of "PROGRAM ITEM" and then
    click on OK.
    6. In the DESCRIPTION LINE, type ATTENDANCE

    8. Tab to the next line and type C:\ATTEND
    9. Click on CHANGE ICON and then click on OK on the reminder that
    there is no icon.
    10. If the filename is not c:\windows\progman.exe then type that in.
    11. Then click on the right hand arrow below the icon pictures.
Use the arrows to pick an icon that you like for this purpose. Then
    click on OK.
    12. When returned to the properties list, click OK.
    13. You are all set and ready to go. The ATTENDANCE MONITOR
is Windows compatible, but does not use the Windows interface internally.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 9
                                SETUP MENU

When you start to use the program, you should go through EACH option on the
SETUP MENU,but choose START THE NEW YEAR FIRST and THEN proceed with the other
options. You may wish to "play" with the "fake attendance data" that comes
on the program disk before you start the new year, which would blank out this
data.

CLASS INFORMATION - There are five periods allowed. For each period, type in
the period number during which that particular class meets.
Then type in the name of the class. For example:
1 - meets period 3, and its name is: "INTRODUCTION TO GEOLOGY".

To leave this section, enter Q. To leave a period blank, enter
0 for the period number. If you do not enter 0, you will get
extra reports for an empty class.

CURRENT TERM - Simply type in the term number. You are allowed to use up to
six terms. Once you enter the term number, it will be stored for
continuing use until you change it again. When you begin a new
term, enter the term number at that time, before you enter any
attendance data. Even if you teach by the semester, you should
enter the correct TERM (1-6) so that report card information
             will be accurate.

BECAUSE SCHOOL CALENDARS SOMETIMES CHANGE DUE TO WEATHER
CONDITIONS, THE PROGRAM DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY DETERMINE WHEN
A NEW TERM IS TO START. YOU MUST REMEMBER TO DO THIS AT THE
             BEGINNING OF A NEW TERM.

To leave this section with no change, enter Q.

This section will next ask you for the total number of terms,
up to 6. Again, enter Q to leave this section with no change.

Next you will be asked to enter the year (####) in which your
school year BEGAN. This would often be in the month of
September. Even if YOU are beginning your use of the program
in April, you must inform the program when the school year BEGAN,
             most likely in September.

Again, enter Q to leave this section with no change.

INSTRUCTOR NAME - Enter your name as you wish it to appear. Your name will
appear this way on the screen during program operation.
If the wrong name appears, you have accessed the wrong attendance
information. Probably someone is sharing your computer, and
you need to work on separating your work areas into separate
             directories.

To leave this section and not change the name, enter Q.

NEW YEAR - Use this section only at the beginning of a new year or a new
semester. This section will erase all data, including all names
of all students and all attendance records. You could copy the
disk before doing this, so that you have a permanent record.
Or, you could print out all the data with the PRINT section.
BE CAREFUL! YOU CANNOT UNDO THIS PROCEDURE ONCE YOU COMPLETE IT.

IMPORT GRADE FILES - If you have the GRADE PLUS program (see first page,
above), you can import the student names and classes from
the grading program into the attendance monitor. This way,
you don't need to enter the names of all students into the
             attendance program.

QUOTE ON/OFF - The program is set to access a quote for the day each time that
the program restarts. You may disable or enable the quote for
the day using this section. The quote function takes a second
or two at startup. However, if your machine is particularly
             slow, it may take more.

When you run the program and a quote appears, you may simply
touch the letter Q to replace the quote with another one.

We also offer JUST A QUOTE ... , a daily quote program
that can give you a daily quote at the startup of your computer,
whether you use WINDOWS or DOS. It allows you to select a quote
to show up on a particular day (a birthday, for example) and
also allows you to edit the quote file itself to include quotes
             of your own choosing.

BEEP AT ___ ABS - The program will automatically notify you with a long
beep if entry of an absence for a particular student brings the
student to a critical level of unexcused absences. You can enter two
such values, a low and a high value.

To leave this section and make no change, type Q.

To disable the beeps, enter a high enough value so that no
student could ever have that many absences, 190 for example.
Be certain that the high value is higher than the low value
or you will be asked to reenter the information.

EXIT PROGRAM - Leave the program and save the data if anything has been
             changed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 10
                                ABSENCE MENU

ENTER ABSENCES - Be certain that you have set the correct date before entering
this menu at all. Once that has been done, simply begin to type
the student name. When it appears on the screen, touch the enter
key and the program will check to be sure that you wish to mark
the student absent for that date. Touch Y <enter> if you do
wish the student absent, and N <enter> if you made an error.
Always check that the term is correct before entering Y.

You can also scan through the list of names using the arrow
             keys, up and down.

You can leave this area entirely by entering ESC as the
             student name.

You can enter up to 110 absences, tardies, or excuseds
absences per term. There are six terms permitted. You do not
need to use all of them. If your school only has four terms,
             just use those four.

Absence is defined as not being present in class for any reason.
An excused absence is defined as not being present but being
excused for that absence. Depending on your school policies,
this will have different meanings; you may not even need to
             use the excused absences.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 11
                               EXCUSED ABSENCE MENU

ENTER EXCUSED ABS - Once you have activated the excused menu, proceed as you
would to enter an absence. Everything works the exact same way.
You must FIRST enter a student as absent before you can
              enter an excused absence.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 12
                                 TARDY MENU

ENTER TARDIES - Once you have activated the tardies menu, proceed as you
would to enter an absence. Everything works the exact same way.
Tardies are not related to absences or to excused abs. in any
way. You may use the tardy section, or not use it; it is not
required to be used in order for the absences section to
               function.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 13
                           PRINT MENU & SHOW MENU

The PRINT MENU will print to the printer the requested information.
The SHOW MENU will show the information on the screen.
Use Q or / to leave a report and return to the main screen.

TERM INFORMATION - This report will show or print the attendance figures
for each student for the current term only. All absences
with the dates, all tardies, and all excused absences are shown.
A tally is shown with these numbers tallied, as well as the
             actual raw data.

YEAR INFORMATION - This report will show or print the attendance figures
as described in the previous report, but for the entire year.

ATTENDANCE CHART - This report will show or print the summary figures for
each student. It will show a tally of absences, excused absences,
and tardies for each term, and a total for the year, but does
             not include actual dates.

HIGH/LOW ABS SUMMARY - This report will show or print the names and tally
figures for students who have a high number of absences. This is
determined by a projection calculation based on the number of
terms and the number of absences to date. It is only a guide,
and cannot predict the future. When LOW ABS is chosen, the
report will show or print students with no absences for the term
or year, depending on your choice.

ALL STUDENT SUMMARY - This report will show or print the names and total
absences, excused absences, unexcused absences, and tardies
for each student, either for the year or for the term.
Use this chart to do your term attendance for report cards.

                               YOUR DATA DISKS

Needless to say, your attendance is important information, and you
do not want to damage the disk media that contains your data.
With this in mind, you should take several precautionary measures
     to prevent data loss:

     1. Frequently print your data using PRINT YEAR INFORMATION.
Also, physically copy your data disk periodically using DOS
commands. Find someone to help you if you are not sure how.

     2. Use only highest quality disks for data storage.

     3. Keep your disk drives in clean, optimum operating condition.
Keep dust and cigarette smoke away from your drives.

     4. Do not try to overfill the disks with data.

     5. Never try to use a data disk that has under 40,000 bytes free
     space left.

     6. Never remove the data disk until the disk drive light is
completely out. If you go "by sound" or try to beat the drives,
you run an excellent chance of creating cross-linked files that
would be difficult if not impossible to recover.

     7. Keep your disks away from magnetism (loudspeakers, radios);
     keep your disks away from liquids, dirt, dust, heat, or bending;
and keep your disks away from the monitor or the computer, except
     for the drives.

     8. Do not use CTRL-BREAK to terminate any program. You will
definitely lose the data you have worked on; you may damage the
     entire disk directory.

     9. HARD DRIVE USERS: Frequently copy your data onto a floppy
disk. FREQUENTLY use proper procedures to maintain your hard
drive, especially CHKDSK and other HARD DRIVE UTILITIES.
